Every year on March 8 , we celebrate International Women's Day , a time to honor the achievements, challenges, and progress of women around the world. But what are the origins of Women's Day?
Women's Day was born to celebrate the social, economic and political achievements of women, as well as to remember the struggles for gender equality.
Its origins date back to the early 1900s , in a period of great excitement for workers' rights and women's suffrage. One of the most cited events is the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York (1911) , in which 146 workers died, an event that highlighted the terrible working conditions. However, International Women's Day was officially established in 1910 by the socialist movement, with the first celebration in 1911 in several European countries.
In 1977, the UN recognized March 8 as an official day to promote gender equality and women's rights. In Italy, the tradition of the mimosa as a symbol of the holiday was introduced in 1946 by the Unione Donne Italiane, to represent female strength and resilience.
Today, March 8th is a day of reflection and celebration, with events, demonstrations and initiatives aimed at promoting a more equal and inclusive society.
